Did you know that during one single year you sweat 26 gallons
into the bed, making it a fantastic breeding ground for bacteria! Couple this with other sources of dirt from food crumbs, bodily oils, skin cells, creams and lotions all absorbed into your bedding and you will have a healthy environment for bacteria to manifest. YUCK!
To eliminate a potential fungi infusion in your bed, we've put together a solid time table of our recommended times for cleaning all of your *bedding. Remember, every part of your bed is a potential nest for bacteria, including your mattress! Although we don't clean mattresses, you can easily purchase a steam cleaner online and clean it yourself, or check out mattress cleaners on your local listings.
*Bedding includes: duvets, blankets, pillows, sheets
Sheets
Sheets include duvet covers, wrap and elasticated sheets, pillow cases, cotton blankets and mattress covers. Using sheets actually creates a barrier between you and the pillow, duvet or mattress meaning that this is the first place bacteria is likely to start infesting. These items should be washed regularly!
Ideal cleaning: Every week
Blankets/ throw
These are fluffy blankets you might put on top of your duvet or at the end of your bed. While most of us don't have direct contact with these types of blankets, sweat can still seep into the fabric after a period of time. If you have pets that like to climb on your bed, they could also be transferring microscopic life with their paws and bellies, meaning the blankets should be washed more frequently.
With pets: Every Month
Without pets: Every 2-3 months
Pillows
I'm sure we all know that our scalps secrete natural oils into the hair to keep it smooth and shiny, but did you know that a lot of those oils transfer onto your pillow? Pillows are fluffy making them a great habitat for microbes.
Ideal cleaning: Every month
Duvets
Like pillows, duvets are fluffy items which also make them good resting place for bacteria. Unfortunately, these items are the parts of our bedding we wash THE LEAST FREQUENTLY. An easy way to tell if your duvet hasn't been cleaned in a while is when the colour starts to turn from a pure white to a yellow/ magnolia colour. The colour change might be only slightly, so we recommend to check the colour with something we know is pure white like a sheet of paper. Whats worst, any type of item filled with feathers will start to deteriorate if left uncleaned for long periods of time.
Idea cleaning: Every month
