Types of Trouser Alterations
We see the trousers of our dream and hasten to buy it - only to find that it needs to be altered: whether the trousers length is too long, or the trousers waist too big, or the trousers legs are too baggy.
Trousers alteration is a special skill that not all tailors have. Our in-house tailor is very skilled at alterations and takes great care in making sure that you, the customer, is happy with the alteration. Here are the most common trousers alteration services we offer.
Trouser Repair
Although having a rip in your trousers is the fashion but ever find that you have ripped your trousers in the most awkward crotch area?
It could be because you were running for the bus, playing sports or just chilling. Our expert tailor can do wonders to that rip. If it cannot be stitched we use a patch to conceal the rip. We match the fabric to your trousers and sew a pattern around the fabric so it looks like a fashion piece.

Trouser waist alterations
Two things that can be done to a trousers waist. If you feel you can’t breathe and are suffocating inside your pants then they are tight around the middle and uncomfortable particularly if you sit down for a long period of time. If your trousers are falling off of you or you need to constantly wear a belt, then they are too big. Our tailor can take the waist in or out and give your trousers a more comfortable fit.
An important thing to remember is, it is simpler to take the waist in (make smaller as there’s much more room to take the waist in) than to let it out (make bigger). This is because some trousers have very little extra fabric at the seam. Altering the waist of trousers means altering the part that covers the seat of your pants (your derrière). This is because when you take the waist in, there will be excess fabric at the back that will need to be removed so it hugs you smoothly. Alternatively if you let the waist out you will need to adjust the seat so that it’s not too tight and uncomfortable.
Some trousers have elasticated waist to give that extra comfort. Over time, the elasticity wears out and needs replacing. Our tailor replaces the elastic to match the original one - colour and width. You will try this on and any alterations done so it sits nicely on your hips/waist.
Trouser length alterations
There is no one size fits all when it comes to trousers length. It could be either too long or too short. This is where we, at Five Elms, come to the rescue.
Trouser shortening is the most popular type of trousers alteration; it can be the latest jeans you bought, or even children’s school trousers that need shortening. For a contemporary look, the trousers can be made a little shorter so that they just touch the top of your shoes or graze your ankle for that casual carefree look. Our tailor can alter to the length you desire with the same finish as the original hemming - just let us know when you book it in
Trousers lengthening, like trousers shortening, also need to be lengthened to the extent of whatever hem material is left at the bottom. Some garments shrink when washed for the first time and require lengthening, or your child has outgrown their trousers and you want it lengthened instead of buying a new one. Or you are getting kitted up for a fancy do and your trousers are too short with your heels. Not all trousers have the same fit and you will find that a length 30” in one make is not the same as another make when you try them on.
Suit Trouser Alterations
Just imagine an important date coming up - be it a job interview, a social gathering or perhaps just a feel good day. You have a new suit for this special event but the trousers are either too long or not touching your shoe - which is your style.
Don’t panic. We are here to help. Our tailor would alter the length to your exact preference. If the trousers are too short, it can be lengthened to the extent of whatever hem material is left at the bottom. If it is too long, it can be shortened to your preference so you feel confident in them. Our tailor would replace all internal stitching and overlock stitching as the original stitching.
We can also add the heal tape onto the inside of the trousers hem to avoid wear and tear which can happen.For a professional look, it is advisable to alter your suit trousers to your fit.
Suit Trouser Waistband
Some people like to wear belts or braces to have that comfortable feel. You don’t have to. We can alter your trousers waistband to fit snugly and comfortably.
Manufacturers usually provide extra material to enlarge your waistband if required because waistlines fluctuate in size. The exact amount of material varies according to size and this is found at the centre rear seam.
The same applies to reduce your waistband to provide that snug fit. Our tailor would alter the back seam to ensure it sits neatly on your back seat.
Trouser Alteration Cost
The cost of alterations vary according to the alteration needed. As much as we would like to offer quotes online, alterations really are priced on a cost by cost basis. That's because every repair is different, and so are assessed individually.
We prefer to see the garment before we give a quote as fabric varies and some might require special finishing or that extra touch. We regularly research the cost of repairs in our area to ensure we charge our customers a reasonable and fair price.
We can provide a quick turn-around time for straight forward items. We will give you an indication of completion date and the alteration cost once we see the garment.
