Make your 2020 Resolution a pledge to get your laundry Green!

“The ice caps are melting” The world is heating up by 1 degree”

If you’ve ever been tempted to venture into a more eco friendly lifestyle, you will know the hardship of giving up plastic based products and materials, especially when it is linked with convenience - the pillar of our 21st century society.

Many of us turn to the food and beverage industry as the top culprits for committing plastic harm to the environment, but many of us don’t entertain the thought of other industries that also contribute tremendously to the plastic pollution - including the cleaning and textile industry.

As professional cleaners, it is our job to help you to understand exactly what the best practice is for helping the environment in our industry. Here are our top tips to help you on your greener journey:

Female folding laundry

TIP 1 - USE ‘CLEANER’ DETERGENT

Most laundry detergents today are in liquid form & come in a plastic bottle.

Even though the bottle is recyclable, once it leaves your house you don’t really know if it will be recycled or not.

Most caps on bottles cannot be recycled either.

A great alternative for liquid detergent is to go back to old fashioned powdered detergent.

Not only does it last longer, you get more product for your money, so it will benefit the environment and your wallet.

You can easily find powdered detergent in eco friendly packaging, that is stored in a paper bag that can be recycled or composted after use.

TIP 2 - WASH FULL LOADS

Laundry doesn’t need to be done every day, and if you are a small family you could get away with cleaning once/ twice a week.

Wait until your laundry basket is full before starting a load.

Not only will it save on money and energy, but it’s less laundry chore’s to do during the week.

TIP 3 - DON’T WEAR PLASTIC BAGS

Did you know that the majority of clothes sold on the UK hight street is made of plastic fibre material?

This same fibre material is also used to make the 15p bags at your local supermarket!

These plastic fibres are very cheap to manufacture which is why materials like polyester, nylon, acrylic and polyurethane are everywhere.

These fibres are used to make the clothes you know and love and are the cause of the massive controversy that is micro fibres.

When these fabrics are washed, they start to deteriorate over time and shed small amounts of plastic into the drum of a washing machine, which then gets washed away ending up in the ocean.

Because these micro fibres are so small, they won’t be able to be filtered out by a sewage system and head straight for the ocean.

Once in the ocean, fish start to feed on these fibres thinking they’re food, and once those fish are caught and eaten by us, we are ingesting the plastic waste too! Image eating your socks!

So what can we do about this?

Firstly, we should wear down our clothes as much as possible, until they are no longer wearable, (and we don’t mean that by fashion standards, but by actual deterioration of the clothing) then seek to find better alternatives for plastic fabrics.

A great selection of eco friendly fabrics are wool, leather and suede.

For the vegans of this world who might not want to wear animal fabrics, linen, cotton and lyocell are great options too.

TIP 4 - PROTECT YOUR CLOTHES

So with all this natural fibre lying around your closet, unfortunately it will start to attract moths.

A great solution for this is placing moth balls and fragrant pads in and around your cupboard. Not only will they keep your clothes smelling fresh, but they will deter any moths seeking to feast on your clothes.

Here are some great cedar wood moth balls you can try.

TIP 5 - USE LESS TUMBLE DRYER

Save money and electricity with this next tip.

Many of us in the winter months use the dryer as a fast and convenient way of drying our clothes. Although it is important to dry clothes properly, there are many alternatives to using a dryer.

Some include hanging clothes over the radiator, or buying a clothes rack to let clothes air dry after cleaning, but we recommend fusing both of these ideas together and getting a large heated rack to hang the washing.

The great thing is these racks are cheap to run. To conserve the heat and help clothes dry quicker, you can place a blanket or sheet over the top of the rack, covering all the sides, so the heat stays in and the clothes keep warm and dry quicker.

TIP 6 - LESS IS MORE

Nowadays, detergent is so advanced that you can wash at lower temperates, so make sure you keep your wash at 30 degrees.

You may even be able to get away with washing at 20! Try it out on a load or two and notice the difference.

BONUS TIP

If you get your laundry done professionally, commercial washers and dryers tend to be more energy efficient than domestic versions. You will be able to wash more in one load at one time than multiple loads in a smaller machine.

Professional cleaners will also dry and fold your laundry, and if want them to, will be able to iron for you too! Leaving you less time doing laundry and more time for yourself.

You can also ask them to use a green detergent, or provide your own.

WHAT WE DON’T RECOMMEND

DON’T Use home made cleaning products - Baking soda and what? Leave that for the cooking!

DON’T Keep wearing your clothes till they smell or are heavily stained - This makes it harder to remove the stains and smells.

DON’T Mix colours - make sure to separate darks and lights. Keep two separate baskets for both loads.
