TIP 3 - DON’T WEAR PLASTIC BAGS
Did you know that the majority of clothes sold on the UK hight street is made of plastic fibre material?
This same fibre material is also used to make the 15p bags at your local supermarket!
These plastic fibres are very cheap to manufacture which is why materials like polyester, nylon, acrylic and polyurethane are everywhere.
These fibres are used to make the clothes you know and love and are the cause of the massive controversy that is micro fibres.
When these fabrics are washed, they start to deteriorate over time and shed small amounts of plastic into the drum of a washing machine, which then gets washed away ending up in the ocean.
Because these micro fibres are so small, they won’t be able to be filtered out by a sewage system and head straight for the ocean.
Once in the ocean, fish start to feed on these fibres thinking they’re food, and once those fish are caught and eaten by us, we are ingesting the plastic waste too! Image eating your socks!
So what can we do about this?
Firstly, we should wear down our clothes as much as possible, until they are no longer wearable, (and we don’t mean that by fashion standards, but by actual deterioration of the clothing) then seek to find better alternatives for plastic fabrics.
A great selection of eco friendly fabrics are wool, leather and suede.
For the vegans of this world who might not want to wear animal fabrics, linen, cotton and lyocell are great options too.
