Take a look at the lengths we go to, to make sure your gown is as good as new

At last! The big day has been and gone. After all the stress and anxiety built up over the past year, you’re married and back from your fabulous honeymoon vacation.

Unfortunately, you have arrived back to a wedding dress that looks worse for wear. The men are lucky enough to get away with hiring a tux, but us ladies don’t have it so easy.

Plus, wedding gown prices hit the purse hard, and after having worn the dress for less than 24 hours the best thing to do would be to let it serve a purpose as a sacred memorabilia of the most important day in our lives.

What better way to treasure the memory of your big day with the gown beautifully wrapped and preserved in a box.

Preserving a wedding gown can be a tricky task, as one would expect. With the immaculate beading, and fine exquisite detailing, each dress is as unique as the person wearing it.

I am going to walk you through exactly how we clean a wedding gown with the expertise and care we take to make sure your dress arrives preserved and as beautiful as the day you bought it, for years to come.

Step 1: Inspection

We start the cleaning by analysing the fabric, structure, embellishment and materials used that creates the dress in all its glory.

Having knowledge of the key elements that make up the dress is a fundamental part of cleaning. It helps us to decide the best possible way to clean the gown, making sure the process and solvents we use will not damage the delicate fabrics or beading.

We inspect the dress carefully for any visible and invisible stains. Typical stains can include spilled wine or food, mud marks on the trail especially if part of the wedding was outside. Makeup, perspiration, deodorant and perfume marks are also quite common.

The gown might have a label, which helps us enormously, but designer & expensive gowns may not have labels, but that should not be a problem. Our expertise in wedding dress cleaning will serve us greatly when cleaning your gown.

Step 2: Cleaning

Depending on our inspection analysis, we will choose the best method, solvent and stain remover for cleaning.

Some gowns may have an intricate dress structure, so in some cases we may have to unstitch the dress, and clean parts separately and stitching again after cleaning.

Any boning, skirt loops or delicate beading are removed before cleaning to avoid damage.

Step 3: Hand Finishing

After the delicate cleaning process, all wedding gowns are hand finished with steam and other tools to remove creases and maintain the fragile dress structure.

Anything that was removed such as boning, or skirt hoops are replaced back into the dress if the customer wishes.

Step 4: Packaging

Once the cleaning has commenced, the final step is to carefully pack the gown in a large preservation box, layered between acid free tissue paper.

Preservation boxes are often quite large, up to 2m in length, so make sure you have a suitable place to store it. We recommend you find a space in a room that is low in humidity, out of direct sunlight away from moths. You can place moth repellent near or around the box if you have any concerns.

You may opt to have the dress hung or put back in the original hanging travel case that may have been provided when you purchased the gown. We highly recommend not to do this, as the travel case is only a temporary storage place, and over time the gown will deteriorate, and may result in damage over the years.
